Who These Witnesses Were

The Army Reserve helicopter crew involved in the 18 October 1973 Ohio encounter consisted of:

  • Captain Lawrence Coyne, aircraft commander;
  • First Lieutenant Arrigo Jezzi, co-pilot;
  • Sergeant John Healey, flight medic;
  • Sergeant Robert Yanacsek, crew chief.

The helicopter was flying at night near Mansfield, Ohio.

This page concerns the crew as a group while preserving differences in seat, duty, training and sight line. Coyne's specific command actions should not automatically be attributed to every occupant.

What Is Attributable to the Crew

Across near-event accounts, the crew broadly supported:

  • seeing one or more unusual lights;
  • a red or red-dominant light appearing on an apparent approach path;
  • concern about a possible collision;
  • Coyne placing the helicopter into a descent or evasive manoeuvre;

Those differences should be retained as evidence about perception rather than removed to create unanimity.

How the Accounts Entered the Record

The incident generated a near-midair-collision or aviation report and was investigated by civilian UFO researchers.

Separate interviews conducted relatively close to the event preserve individual overlap and disagreement. The Center for UFO Studies report provides a detailed reconstruction based on crew interviews and contextual information.

Coyne later described the event in public, including before a United Nations-related meeting in 1978. His later statement is useful but should not replace the earlier individual crew material.

The event occurred before routine cockpit video, GPS logging or lightweight flight-data recording. No continuous instrument package survives.

Evidence Analysis

Directness and Seat-Specific Access

All four crew members were direct participants, but their evidential access differed.

Coyne and Jezzi had:

  • forward cockpit views;
  • flight controls;
  • primary instruments;
  • responsibility for collision avoidance.

Healey and Yanacsek had:

  • rear or side views;

  • better access to some cabin illumination effects;

The flight occurred at night under reportedly clear, calm conditions. Darkness allowed the light to be conspicuous but reduced range and scale cues.

A light on or near a collision course can appear stationary in bearing while rapidly increasing in brightness. This can create an impression of deliberate approach even for a conventional aircraft.

Once the helicopter turned or descended, relative geometry changed rapidly. Object path and aircraft path must be separated before physical manoeuvres are inferred.

Object Shape and Colours

Crew descriptions included red and green illumination and, in some accounts, a more structured or cigar-like source.

Red and green are also standard aviation colours. A conventional aircraft viewed from changing angles can present different colour combinations.

The reported broad green illumination of the cockpit is more difficult to explain through a distant point source. It may indicate:

  • a nearby bright green light;
  • reflection within the canopy or cabin;
  • an aviation light viewed through moisture or optical scattering;
  • a transient luminous phenomenon;
  • an unresolved external source.

No calibrated image establishes shape.

Collision Avoidance

Coyne's evasive descent is a well-supported operational response. It demonstrates that the apparent approach was taken seriously.

It does not establish the object's true distance. Pilots are trained to react conservatively to uncertain collision threats, and a correct safety response can be triggered by a misjudged source.

The Reported Altitude Gain

The helicopter was reportedly placed in a descent, yet the crew later noted a climb or higher altitude without the expected deliberate power input. This is often interpreted as an external lifting force.

A rigorous assessment requires:

  • exact collective and cyclic inputs;
  • engine torque;
  • rotor RPM;
  • vertical speed;
  • airspeed;
  • aircraft attitude;
  • altimeter lag;
  • terrain pressure setting;
  • duration of the descent;
  • normal aerodynamic recovery behaviour.

No flight recorder preserves those values.

A helicopter can gain altitude through pilot input, changing translational lift, airspeed and attitude even when the crew's attention is focused on an external hazard. This does not prove an ordinary explanation, but it limits claims that the object physically lifted the aircraft.

Ground Witnesses

Ground reports have been associated with the event. Their value depends on exact time, location and whether they independently observed the helicopter-object interaction.

A report of a light in the area supports an external stimulus. It does not automatically confirm close range, green illumination or altitude effects.

Instrument and Radar Evidence

No public radar track or complete air-traffic record establishes the object's path. No flight-data recorder verifies the helicopter's vertical profile.

The case is therefore a strong multi-crew testimony record rather than a multisensor case.

Conventional aircraft on deceptive approach geometry

  • Red and green lights fit aviation.
  • A collision-course target can appear stationary and then expand rapidly.
  • Night-time range is difficult to judge.

  • A large aircraft with unusual lighting could appear elongated.
  • Military traffic may not have been known to the crew.
  • Relative position could produce a close-seeming pass.

Weaknesses

  • No operation has been matched to the time and route.
  • The reported low-speed or hovering phase is difficult for a large fixed-wing aircraft.
  • Noise and navigation-light pattern should be testable.

Astronomical source plus aircraft manoeuvre effects

  • A bright star or planet can scintillate red and green.
  • Helicopter movement can create apparent motion.
  • A separate conventional light could account for the collision alarm.

  • Does not readily explain intense cabin illumination.
  • Crew described an apparent near pass rather than a distant fixed source.

The group should not be converted into one perfectly consistent account. Shared-platform dependence, unknown range and absent flight data limit conclusions about shape, proximity and external effects on the aircraft.
