Flight context

UH-1H 68-15444 of the 316th Medical Detachment was returning from Columbus to Cleveland under visual conditions. At roughly 23:05 near Mansfield, the helicopter was reported near 2,500 feet on a north-easterly heading.

Approach and evasive descent

Yanacsek noticed a red light on the eastern horizon. Within about thirty seconds it appeared to converge on a collision course. Coyne took control, lowered the collective and began a powered descent; the crew later reported intermittent or failed radio contact with Mansfield.

Close approach and reported climb

The crew described a grey or metallic cigar- or domed-shaped body with red, white and green lights, no wings or conventional engine noise. After green illumination filled the cockpit, they said the aircraft climbed while Coyne believed the collective remained in descent position. The object then moved westward and disappeared; the helicopter landed safely without major damage.

How the Coyne Story Developed

Project Blue Book had closed in 1969, so the event received ordinary Army handling rather than a formal Blue Book investigation. Ohio press reported the case, while NICAP and the Center for UFO Studies conducted the most detailed published inquiry. Jennie Zeidman’s CUFOS report remains the principal secondary investigation.

Evidence Assessment & Hypotheses

Within the public record of the Coyne helicopter incident of 18 October 1973 there are few elements more central, yet more carefully bounded, than the multi-crew military testimony. Four trained Army Reserve observers reported a coherent sequence under conditions of an emergency descent. The reported climb, if accurately recalled and if the collective remained fully down, would be difficult to explain by ordinary helicopter dynamics alone. The absence of an identified conventional aircraft and the green illumination further distinguish the case from a routine near-miss. Material limitations are equally important. Night-time visual estimates of distance and size are unreliable. The altitude gain was not recorded by an external system or flight-data recorder; conversion of airspeed into altitude when levelling from a steep descent, or an unconscious collective input under stress, remain plausible. Temporary radio and compass effects could have conventional causes. Ground-witness support is limited and secondarily collected. Multi-crew visual sequence

Captain Lawrence Coyne (pilot), First Lieutenant Arrigo Jezzi (co-pilot), Sergeant John Healey and Sergeant Robert Yanacsek reported a rapidly approaching luminous object that appeared to stop or hover near the helicopter, illuminate the cockpit with green light, and then depart. The core sequence is consistent across the differing viewing positions of the four crew members. Drawings produced shortly afterward depict a cigar- or dome-shaped body with red, white and green lights. The strength of this stream lies in the number and training of the observers and the operational context of an emergency manoeuvre. Its limitations include the absence of photographs or independent sensor data and the inherent unreliability of night-time distance and size estimates under stress.

Reported altitude gain and flight dynamics

Coyne initiated a descent to avoid collision and later reported that the helicopter climbed substantially while the collective was held fully down. If accurate, this would be difficult to reconcile with normal helicopter aerodynamics. No flight-data recorder captured the event. Possible conventional contributions include conversion of airspeed into altitude when levelling from a steep descent, or an unconscious collective input under stress. The reported climb remains one of the most analytically significant elements of the case and is still open.

Radio and compass effects

The crew reported temporary radio and magnetic-compass anomalies during the encounter. These were not independently logged by ground stations. Conventional causes (electrical interference, instrument transient, or operator attention under emergency conditions) remain possible. The anomalies are reported consistently by the crew yet lack external corroboration.
