Who This Witness Was

Pedro Saucedo was a farm worker or labourer travelling by truck with Joe Salaz near Levelland, Texas, on the evening of 2 November 1957. He became one of the first named witnesses in a night of reports involving bright objects, lights near roads and temporary vehicle or electrical failures.

Saucedo’s account is important because it was communicated to the Levelland police during the event period rather than being created years later. Police desk officer A. J. Fowler received the call. Saucedo and Salaz occupied the same truck and shared the same immediate circumstances.

Saucedo should be assessed for what he personally described. Other motorists’ reports provide context and possible pattern evidence, but their object sizes, positions and vehicle effects should not be transferred to him.

What Is Attributable to This Witness

Published summaries and the Project Blue Book case material attribute the following central sequence to Saucedo:

  • he and Salaz were driving west of Levelland;
  • they saw a blue flash or bright light near the road;
  • the truck’s engine stopped and its lights or electrical system were affected;
  • Saucedo perceived a luminous, elongated or rocket-like object rising or approaching;
  • he left or lowered himself from the truck because he was frightened;
  • he described a loud sound, rush of wind, heat or physical rocking as the object passed;
  • after the light or object moved away, the truck restarted and operated normally;
  • Saucedo reported the event by telephone to the police.

Exact wording varies among the police account, official investigation and later quotations. The witness page should identify which details appear in the earliest available record and which depend on later summaries.

What Should Not Be Attributed to This Witness

Saucedo is not the direct source for every feature of the Levelland case. The following require separate witnesses:

  • an object 100 or 200 feet long sitting on a road;
  • every reported vehicle stall around Levelland;
  • sheriff, fire-chief or police visual observations later in the night;
  • an egg-shaped object described by other motorists;
  • fifteen fully independent close encounters;
  • a radar detection or military intercept;
  • physical damage to multiple vehicles;
  • proof that one object caused all reports;
  • a scientifically measured electromagnetic pulse;
  • extraterrestrial origin.

The wider cluster may strengthen or complicate Saucedo’s evidence. It does not make him a witness to events he did not see.

How the Account Entered the Record

Saucedo contacted the Levelland Police Department, where Fowler initially suspected a joke. Additional calls followed from motorists describing bright objects and vehicle failures. The accumulation of reports led local law-enforcement personnel to investigate.

The United States Air Force opened a Project Blue Book case. An investigator arrived after the principal night and reviewed witness information, weather and possible explanations. The official case became associated with electrical storms, ball lightning or other weather effects, although the adequacy of the investigation and the exact local storm conditions have remained disputed.

The official file survives in the Project Blue Book archive. It provides a documentary basis for the event but contains summaries rather than a complete forensic examination of Saucedo’s truck and environment.

Evidence Analysis

Contemporaneous Reporting

Saucedo’s police call is a major strength. It places his account within the night’s developing events and before the case became nationally famous. Fowler’s recollection that callers sounded excited supports sincerity but does not determine cause.

The original call recording is not publicly available. The earliest wording is mediated through police notes and later interviews. Small changes in object shape, direction, sound and distance may reflect summarisation rather than witness inconsistency.

Direct Visual Access

Saucedo reported a bright nearby phenomenon from a stopped or slowing truck. He believed it passed close enough to produce sound, heat, wind and vehicle movement.

Night-time glare can obscure shape and distance. A bright source near the road may appear larger and closer than it is. Conversely, a genuinely nearby object could produce stronger contextual effects than a distant light. No measured bearing, angular size or range survives.

Shared Witness Joe Salaz

Salaz provides a second person in the vehicle, reducing the likelihood that Saucedo alone hallucinated or invented the initial stimulus. The two witnesses shared:

  • one vehicle;
  • nearly identical viewing geometry;
  • the same electrical system;
  • immediate communication;
  • later discussion.

Their evidence supports a shared event but is not equivalent to two geographically independent observations. The extent of Salaz’s own attributable statement should be made clear; many retellings are dominated by Saucedo’s words.

Vehicle Failure

The reported engine and light failure is central because it suggests an effect beyond visual misidentification. The restart after departure creates an apparent temporal relationship.

A temporal sequence does not establish causation. Vehicles can stall because of fuel, ignition, battery, generator, wiring or driver response. A strong nearby electrical event could affect ignition, but no instrument measured an electromagnetic field.

No publicly documented inspection preserved the truck’s condition immediately before and after the encounter. The absence of a diagnosed fault leaves both an external effect and ordinary malfunction open.

Relationship to Other Levelland Reports

Other motorists independently called police with broadly similar accounts of lights or objects and temporary vehicle problems. This pattern is the strongest reason to examine Saucedo’s event beyond a single stall.

The reports vary in exact location, shape, dimensions, colour and duration. Some were anonymous or poorly documented. Witnesses may have learned that police were receiving similar calls, particularly later in the night.

A common external phenomenon is plausible, but it is not established that one object moved from witness to witness. The cluster could combine weather, traffic, vehicle faults and socially reinforced reporting.

Weather and Electrical-Storm Evidence

Ball lightning or unusual electrical activity has long been proposed. Such phenomena can produce bright globes, sounds, heat and local electrical effects. Severe weather can also cause ordinary ignition problems and power fluctuations.

The weakness lies in matching the hypothesis to the actual conditions. Accounts differ over whether thunderstorms were active at Saucedo’s precise location and time. General regional storm activity is insufficient; a useful explanation requires local meteorological data and a plausible mechanism for the elongated, passing object he described.

Ball lightning is rare and incompletely understood. Invoking it does not automatically solve the case.

Sound, Wind and Heat

Saucedo’s report of thunder-like sound, rushing air and heat would be expected from some nearby physical or electrical phenomena. These features are less compatible with a distant star or ordinary celestial source.

They remain subjective and unmeasured. A nearby aircraft, vehicle, gust front, lightning discharge or intense fear response may contribute. The truck rocking, if accurately recalled and externally caused, narrows the possibilities but does not identify the source.

Investigation Quality

Project Blue Book’s inquiry has been criticised as brief and predisposed towards a weather explanation. The delay meant that transient conditions and vehicle state could not be preserved.

Official classification should not be accepted or rejected solely because it was official. The correct approach is to test whether the proposed weather mechanism accounts for Saucedo’s specific observation and the wider pattern using contemporaneous data.

Alternative Interpretations

Ball lightning or another atmospheric-electrical phenomenon

Overall Assessment

We assess Pedro Saucedo as a significant primary witness because he made a contemporaneous police report combining a shared visual event with a temporary vehicle failure. His evidence is stronger than a late retrospective story and forms an early anchor for the wider Levelland incident.

From the available evidence we judge that Saucedo and Salaz probably encountered a real external light or atmospheric event. Confidence is lower that it directly disabled the truck because no diagnostic inspection or electromagnetic measurement was made. The apparent restart correlation is important but not sufficient to establish causation.

Atmospheric electricity remains a credible explanation category, although a complete local reconstruction has not demonstrated it.
