Paul Trent helped create the two McMinnville photographs after he and his wife noticed an unusual object above their farm.
Who This Witness Was
Paul Trent was a farmer living with his wife Evelyn near Sheridan, south-west of McMinnville, Oregon. On 11 May 1950, Evelyn reportedly saw an unusual object while outside and called Paul. Paul retrieved or received the family camera and took two photographs before the object moved away.
The resulting negatives became among the most widely analysed photographs in UFO history. Paul is a direct witness to the object during the photographic sequence and the person responsible for operating the camera. Evelyn was the initial observer and should remain a distinct witness source.
Paul’s occupation and apparent lack of photographic sophistication are relevant to assessments of opportunity and possible fabrication. They do not establish authenticity. A simple physical model would not require advanced image manipulation.
What Is Attributable to This Witness
The early record attributes the following to Paul Trent:
- Evelyn called his attention to a bright, silvery or metallic-looking disc-shaped object;
- he obtained a loaded camera and took two exposures;
- the photographs were made from two nearby positions in the farmyard;
- the object appeared to move slowly and change orientation between the images;
- it made no obvious engine noise, smoke or flame;
- Paul did not claim a measured distance or physical size with confidence;
- the remaining film was developed after a delay;
- the photographs reached the local Telephone-Register and then national media;
- the original negatives were later located and examined by the Colorado UFO Project;
- Paul maintained that the photographs depicted the object he and Evelyn saw.
The negatives establish that the photographed image was present on two frames. They do not by themselves establish whether the source was a distant aerial object or a small nearby model.
What Should Not Be Attributed to This Witness
The following should not be presented as facts measured by Paul:
- that the object was tens of metres in diameter;
- that it was more than a kilometre away;
- that it flew under intelligent control;
- that a gust of wind was conclusively caused by the object;
- that the negatives rule out a suspended model;
- that the Trents never received any travel, publicity or indirect benefit;
- that every technical analyst has judged the photographs genuine;
- that the Condon Report officially authenticated an extraterrestrial craft;
- that a visible line or wire definitively proves a hoax;
- that the object was a secret US vehicle or non-human craft.
Paul reportedly speculated that the object might be a secret American craft. This was an interpretation, not evidence of origin.
How the Account Entered the Record
The film was not developed immediately after the sighting. After development, Paul showed the photographs locally. Reporter Bill Powell and the McMinnville Telephone-Register investigated and published the images on 8 June 1950. Newspapers and Life magazine then reproduced them nationally.
The original negatives moved through press organisations and were temporarily difficult to locate. The University of Colorado UFO Project later found and examined them for the Condon study. Investigator William K. Hartmann conducted geometric, photometric and witness analysis, publishing the case as Photographic Case 46.
Hartmann concluded that the simplest interpretation was consistent with the witnesses’ description of a distant, metallic disc, while explicitly stating that fabrication had not been positively ruled out. He identified the possibility of a small model suspended beneath overhead wires as the principal alternative.
Later analysts reached different conclusions. Bruce Maccabee argued through photometric analysis for a distant object. Robert Sheaffer and other sceptical researchers argued for a nearby suspended model. A modern IPACO photogrammetric study also favoured a small object near the telephone wires. The disagreement is central to the case and should be represented fairly.
Evidence Analysis
Direct Witness and Photographer Roles
Paul was not merely a later owner of the images. He reported seeing the object and taking the photographs while it remained visible. This connects the images to a first-person account.
His testimony and photographs are not independent evidence streams in the strict sense: the photographs are products of the event as he described it, and his description was influenced by what the developed images showed. Evelyn provides a second witness, but the couple shared the setting, interpretation and later publicity.
Original Negatives and Image Integrity
The original negatives are a major strength. Examination found no simple retouching, double exposure or drawn image. The object appears as a real optical image recorded in the scene rather than an alteration made to a print.
This does not rule out staging. A suspended or thrown model would also create a real image on an untouched negative. “The negatives were not tampered with” should not be translated into “the photographed object was distant and extraordinary”.
Two Exposures
Two photographs show an object with similar form from different camera positions and apparent orientations. This reduces some single-frame defects and permits geometric comparison.
The limited sequence also creates ambiguity. There is no continuous film showing approach, transit and departure. A model could be repositioned between frames. The two images do not provide stereo range because the object may have moved and the camera positions were not surveyed contemporaneously.
Overhead Wires and Suspended-Model Hypothesis
The object appears beneath overhead utility wires in both images. Hartmann noted that it remained below roughly the same section of wire despite the change in camera position. This is the strongest geometric basis for a suspended-model hypothesis.
A thin thread may be below the resolving power or contrast of the film. The apparent shift and reorientation could result from moving or twisting a model. Later digital analyses have argued that object position and lighting are compatible with a small model near the wires.
The absence of a clearly visible suspension line does not eliminate this possibility. Conversely, alignment beneath a wire is not direct evidence that a line was present. A distant object seen through the same general foreground area can also appear below wires, although the parallax relationship becomes important.
Photometry and Distance
Hartmann compared brightness and atmospheric scattering in the original negatives. He argued that the relatively pale shadowed underside suggested a significant path of atmosphere and therefore a distant object. His approximate solution implied a large physical diameter.
Photometric distance from one black-and-white scene depends on assumptions about:
- the object’s intrinsic reflectance;
- whether its top and underside were made of the same material;
- film response and development;
- sky illumination;
- haze uniformity;
- negative scanning or measurement;
- shadow geometry.
A small model with specially different surfaces could mimic some brightness relationships. Later analysts dispute whether the method can reliably distinguish a nearby model from a distant craft. The photometry is evidence to weigh, not a direct range measurement.
Lighting and Time of Day
The Trents placed the event near evening. Analysts have debated whether shadows and illumination fit that time or indicate an earlier daytime photograph. Hartmann considered the overall exposure and western sky brightness broadly consistent with the reported evening and overcast conditions, while acknowledging apparent eastward illumination complications.
A definitive time has not been recovered from the film itself. The images should be compared with historical weather, sunset and shadow geometry, but local clouds can create diffuse and counterintuitive lighting.
Camera and Film History
The camera was a relatively simple model and the film already contained family exposures. Paul reportedly finished the roll later before development. The intact roll context argues against some sophisticated laboratory fabrications.
The delay weakened scene control. Investigators did not secure the camera, yard and negatives immediately. Exact camera settings, lens focus, film processing and original camera positions were reconstructed later.
Witness Motivation and Behaviour
Hartmann found the Trents apparently sincere and not strongly motivated by publicity. They did receive a trip to New York and became publicly known, but no clear financial scheme equivalent to a commercial hoax has been documented.
Lack of obvious motive does not prove authenticity. People may stage photographs for attention, amusement or reasons not recoverable decades later. Social reputation testimony helps assess character but cannot determine object distance.
Reported Motion, Wind and Sound
The Trents described slow movement, tipping and later acceleration, with no engine noise or exhaust. Evelyn and Paul differed in emphasis concerning the strength of a breeze.
These are visual and subjective details not independently recorded by the still images. A model can change orientation; a distant object can also do so. The photographs do not measure speed or acceleration.
Hartmann’s Condon Conclusion
Hartmann’s conclusion is often selectively quoted. He regarded the investigated factors as consistent with an extraordinary distant object and considered the case one of the strongest he reviewed. He also wrote that fabrication had not been positively ruled out and directly analysed the suspended-model possibility.
The wider Condon Report did not certify the McMinnville object’s origin. A fair witness page should preserve both the favourable interpretation and Hartmann’s explicit residual uncertainty.
Later Reanalyses
Later analyses have used improved scans, photogrammetry and different assumptions. Some defend the distant-object interpretation; others favour a small suspended model.
Reanalysis quality depends on access to original negatives or high-generation scans, accurate scene geometry and transparent methods. A conclusion based on a compressed online image should carry less weight than examination of original material.
The persistence of disagreement reflects underdetermination: two photographs without measured range can support substantially different physical scenarios.
Alternative Interpretations
A small model suspended from an overhead wire
Strengths
- The object appears beneath approximately the same wire region in both frames.
- A thin suspension line may not resolve on the film.
- A small asymmetric model could reproduce the photographed form.
- Reorientation between exposures can be produced manually or by wind.
- No measured distance contradicts a nearby object.
- Later photogrammetric studies have favoured this geometry.
Weaknesses
- No suspension line or model was recovered.
- Hartmann’s photometry was interpreted as suggesting atmospheric distance.
- The witnesses maintained their account over decades.
- Staging would require a deliberate false narrative by the couple.
- Some geometric and lighting features were judged consistent with the reported motion.
A small object thrown through the air
Strengths
- A domestic object could create a clear optical image.
- It would require no image manipulation.
- Short exposure can freeze motion.
Weaknesses
- The object appears similarly oriented and apparently not spinning freely.
- Two controlled frames would be difficult to obtain accidentally.
- The alignment near the overhead wires favours suspension more than throwing.
- The witnesses described a longer observation than a throw.
A genuine distant conventional or experimental object
Strengths
- The photographs record a coherent physical-looking image.
- Paul reportedly considered a secret US craft possible.
- A distant object could account for atmospheric lightening of contrast.
- No simple retouching was found.
Weaknesses
- No known aircraft or programme has been matched.
- The shape lacks visible conventional flight surfaces.
- The images provide no range or performance data.
- A nearby model is a simpler controllable photographic explanation.
An unidentified extraordinary flying object
Strengths
- Two original negatives preserve a structured disc-like image.
- Hartmann found geometric, physical and psychological factors consistent with the witnesses’ claim.
- The object’s apparent perspectives are mutually coherent.
- The Trents’ account remained broadly stable.
- No definitive conventional object has been identified.
Weaknesses
- Fabrication was not ruled out.
- The wire alignment provides a specific hoax mechanism.
- No independent witness outside the household saw the event.
- No range, radar, material or motion measurement exists.
- Photometric conclusions depend on uncertain surface assumptions.

Overall Assessment
We assess Paul Trent as a central primary witness and the documented photographer of two genuine film images whose physical source remains disputed. The original negatives and traceable publication history make this evidence stronger than an undocumented recollection or a copied print of unknown origin.
From the available evidence we judge that the photographs show a real object or model present in front of the camera, not simple post-exposure retouching. They do not determine range. The suspended-model hypothesis is specific, technically plausible and supported by the relationship to the overhead wires. Hartmann’s photometric work provides a substantive counterargument but depends on assumptions that later analysts contest.
Our assessment therefore separates photographic authenticity from extraordinary-object authenticity. Paul’s testimony is broadly consistent and no decisive motive has been demonstrated, but witness sincerity cannot resolve the geometry. The case remains evidentially important and genuinely contested; it does not establish the technology or origin of the photographed form.
