Parviz Jafari
Jafari became the most cited pilot witness in the Tehran case after describing attempts to approach a bright object over the city.
Who This Witness Was
Parviz Jafari was an Imperial Iranian Air Force F-4 Phantom II pilot who flew the second interception during the Tehran incident of 19 September 1976.
He was later publicly identified as the pilot whose crew reported:
- a brilliant primary light or object;
- an airborne radar lock;
- one or more smaller luminous objects apparently separating from the primary source;

Overall Assessment
We assess Parviz Jafari as a high-value direct military witness to a genuine and operationally unusual interception.
The near-contemporaneous defence message makes the event historically stronger than a later testimonial case. It supports that the second F-4 crew reported a brilliant visual source, radar acquisition, smaller lights and temporary system anomalies.
The surviving record is much stronger for establishing what the crew reported than for establishing why it occurred.
The radar-return comparison does not measure physical size. The timing of the communications and weapons-panel failure does not demonstrate deliberate interference. The apparent descent does not establish a landing.
A simple Jupiter explanation is inadequate for the complete report. A single extraordinary craft is also not required by the evidence.
The most defensible current conclusion is a high-quality unresolved operational incident that may combine a genuinely unidentified aerial stimulus, conventional lights or aircraft and incompletely documented technical failures.
