John Whitted
Whitted corroborated the Chiles-Whitted encounter from the cockpit and helped give the case its classic two-pilot structure.
Who This Witness Was
John B. Whitted was the first officer aboard the Eastern Air Lines DC-3 commanded by Clarence Chiles on 24 July 1948.
Chiles first noticed an approaching light and alerted Whitted. Both pilots then reported a brief, close-looking luminous phenomenon passing the aircraft.
Whitted is a direct witness. He did not initiate the observation and was not informationally isolated from Chiles.
What Is Attributable to This Witness
Whitted's early account broadly included:
- an intensely luminous object;
- an elongated, cigar- or fuselage-like appearance;
- no clearly visible conventional wings;
- apparent openings or illuminated areas;
- rapid passage;
- a red-orange or flame-like trail;
- an apparent climb or departure after passing.
The exact number of openings, closest distance, body proportions and movement should be tied to Whitted's own early statement and sketch.
Later summaries frequently merge his account with Chiles's and present one perfectly uniform object description.
Whitted should not be attributed details that appear only in Chiles's statement.
How the Account Entered the Record
Whitted gave a statement and sketch during the Air Force investigation soon after the flight.
The case entered Air Intelligence Report No. 100-203-79 and the Project Sign record.
The prompt documentation is a major strength. It allows comparison between the two pilots before decades of cultural development.
Passenger Clarence L. McKelvie reported a much more limited brilliant flash or streak. His evidence supports a luminous event but not Whitted's detailed structure.
Later Air Force and scientific analyses favoured a bright meteor or bolide explanation.
Evidence Analysis
Directness and Alerting
Whitted directly observed the phenomenon after Chiles called his attention to it.
The captain's alert determined:
- where he looked;
- when he began observing;
- that an unusual or hazardous object was expected;
- the initial interpretive context.

It is also exactly the set of features that a bright, shallow-angle fireball can produce.

Differences in range, openings, orientation and path should be preserved.

- one pilot focusing on collision avoidance;
- later summary errors.
A genuine structured craft need not produce identical accounts. A meteor can also produce different perceived forms.
McKelvie's Passenger Report
McKelvie reportedly saw a brilliant streak or flash.
This is independent support for an external luminous event.
It does not support:
- windows;
- a fuselage;
- close distance;
- an abrupt climb;
- controlled manoeuvring.
His simpler description is strongly compatible with a bolide.
Fireball or Bolide Hypothesis
A bolide can display:
- blue-white brilliance;
- red and orange colour;
- an elongated luminous head;
- a persistent train;
- fragmentation that resembles openings;
- very rapid angular motion;
- apparent horizontal travel;
- an apparent climb caused by perspective.
The hypothesis explains the common luminous features across all three witnesses.
The principal difficulty is the pilots' impression of ordered vehicle-like structure.
Perceptual Structuring
Human perception rapidly organises fragmented bright stimuli into familiar forms.
A luminous meteor head and fragments can be seen as:
- windows;
- a cabin;
- a fuselage;
- exhaust;
- a constructed vehicle.
This is more likely when the observer must make an immediate collision decision.
Perceptual organisation is not dishonesty or incompetence.
Conventional Aircraft
An aircraft could show windows and a fuselage.
It is weaker for:
- extreme apparent speed;
- intense luminosity;
- flame-like trail;
- lack of identified traffic;
- absence of normal navigation-light pattern.
No specific aircraft was matched.
Apparent Climb
The object was said to climb after passing.
A distant meteor's trajectory can appear to curve or rise due to perspective, Earth curvature and observer motion.
No instrument recorded an active climb.

The early investigative record did not securely establish turbulence, prop-wash or an air wave.
Later retellings sometimes add physical disturbance.
