This entry concerns personnel at Godman Army Airfield, Fort Knox, Kentucky, who observed and responded to an unusual bright object on 7 January 1948.

How the Account Entered the Record

The case generated extensive Air Force documentation and became one of the foundational Project Sign and Project Blue Book incidents.

Early official explanations included Venus. That explanation was later recognised as inadequate for the complete daylight observation, although Venus may have contributed to some visual confusion.

A high-altitude research balloon, often identified as a Skyhook balloon, became the leading later explanation. Additional reports from observers using a telescope described a balloon-like object with cables or a basket.

The exact launch and track documentation has remained incomplete or disputed. The balloon interpretation is therefore strong but not an absolute identification based on a recovered object.

The US Army and other official historical accounts continue to discuss the case because of Mantell's death and the unresolved elements in the public record.

Skyhook balloons were large, high-altitude research balloons associated with classified or semi-classified programmes.

A Skyhook-type balloon fits:

  • long duration;

  • lack of conventional aircraft features;
  • telescope reports of suspended components.

The principal weakness is incomplete documentary closure. A specific launch, track and recovery record has not been universally matched to the event in the public file.

Mantell's Pursuit

Mantell reported climbing towards the object and said it appeared metallic or of tremendous size in some later quoted versions. The exact radio wording is disputed and should be tied to the earliest records.

Fort Knox personnel heard or relayed communications but did not share his cockpit view.

The crash is consistent with:

  • high-altitude hypoxia;
  • continued climb without oxygen;
