Who This Witness Was

Alex Dietrich was a US Navy F/A-18F pilot participating in training with the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group on 14 November 2004. Her aircraft was the second jet in a two-aircraft section led by Commander David Fravor. Each aircraft carried a pilot and weapons-systems officer.

The section was redirected by controllers associated with USS Princeton to investigate an unidentified contact. Fravor descended towards the reported object while Dietrich remained at a higher altitude and observed from a different position.

What Is Attributable to This Witness

Dietrich is a direct source for the airborne visual encounter from the second aircraft.

In named public interviews, she has supported the following central elements:

  • the aircraft were diverted from planned training to investigate an unidentified contact;
  • the aircrews saw an area of disturbed or churning water;
  • a white, oblong or elongated object was visible above the disturbance;
  • the object did not present an obvious conventional aircraft configuration from her perspective;
  • its apparent movement was difficult for the crews to interpret;
  • Fravor descended while Dietrich maintained a higher vantage point;
  • she could not identify the object's technology, operator or origin.

Dietrich has generally used cautious language and has resisted converting an unresolved observation into a claim of extraterrestrial or non-human origin.

What Should Not Be Attributed to This Witness

Dietrich did not operate USS Princeton's radar and is not the direct source for:

  • exact high-altitude tracks;
  • reported rapid descents from approximately 80,000 feet;
  • multi-day radar behaviour;
  • track identity across the entire exercise;
  • the alleged appearance of a contact at the combat-air-patrol point;
  • electronic jamming;
  • radar-derived speed or acceleration.

She did not record the infrared video later known as FLIR1. That footage was obtained on a later sortie by a different aircrew. Dietrich's testimony does not by itself establish that the FLIR1 target was the object she saw.

How the Account Entered the Record

Dietrich's observation occurred within a military exercise and was reportedly debriefed. A complete public copy of her immediate written statement, debrief recording or mission audio has not been released.

She discussed the event publicly under her own name in a 2021 60 Minutes report, approximately sixteen years after the encounter. The interview is direct and attributable but retrospective.

The Department of Defense released and authenticated three Navy videos in 2020, including FLIR1, and stated that the phenomena depicted remained characterised as unidentified. Authentication establishes that the footage is genuine Navy material. It does not establish the target's identity or prove that it is continuous with Dietrich's earlier visual observation.

NAVAIR's FOIA reading room contains released materials associated with the Navy videos and their classification review. Those documents provide institutional context but do not supply the full raw radar and telemetry package needed to reconstruct Dietrich's encounter.

Evidence Analysis

Directness and Access

Dietrich was physically present and had a direct visual line of sight. Her account materially broadens the case beyond Fravor alone.

Her viewing geometry differed from Fravor's. This is valuable because it provides a second platform, but it also means she could not necessarily confirm details visible only during his closer descent.

The absence of publicly available aircraft telemetry and exact positional data prevents independent reconstruction of:

  • slant range;
  • angular size;
  • physical dimensions;
  • relative velocity;
  • acceleration;
  • the object's precise relation to the water disturbance.

Relevant Expertise

Dietrich's naval aviation experience is relevant to:

  • normal cockpit and formation operations;
  • familiar military and civilian aircraft configurations;
  • intercept procedures;
  • the appearance of ordinary aviation activity;
  • judging whether an event was operationally unusual.

It does not replace missing range or sensor measurements. Even an experienced pilot cannot calculate a distant object's true size or speed from visual appearance alone when distance is unknown.

Independence and Shared Communication

Four aircrew in two aircraft reportedly observed the event. This is stronger than a solitary sighting.

The observations were partly rather than wholly independent:

  • the crews were operating as a coordinated section;
  • they shared radio communication;
  • controllers directed them to the same area;
  • each crew knew the others were responding to an unknown contact;
  • post-flight discussion may have influenced later shared wording.

Dietrich's different altitude and platform nevertheless provide a meaningful additional visual perspective.

The Disturbed Water

Dietrich's support for disturbed water is relevant because it supplies a reference below the aerial object and may indicate a separate surface or subsurface event.

The record does not establish:

  • the disturbance's dimensions;
  • whether it was caused by the object;
  • whether a submarine, marine animal, current, wake or other process was present;
  • whether the object was physically close to the surface rather than aligned with it from the aircrews' viewpoint.

It should be retained as an observed contextual feature without assuming causation.

Relationship to Radar Reports

The aircrews' diversion supports an operational link between radar activity and the visual intercept. It does not prove that every radar track described before or after the encounter was the same object Dietrich saw.

No complete public raw-radar package permits an independent analyst to verify the most extreme altitude and acceleration claims. Operator testimony remains important, but it is a separate evidence channel.

Relationship to FLIR1

FLIR1 is authentic Navy footage from the same broader exercise period. It was recorded after the visual encounter by another aircrew.

The public evidence does not establish a continuous sensor track connecting Dietrich's object to the recorded target. The video's identity, range and kinematics remain disputed. It therefore provides associated case evidence rather than direct instrumentation of Dietrich's observation.

Alternative Interpretations

Range and relative-motion misestimation

Strengths

  • No public range measurement exists for the visual object.
  • Aircraft motion can produce strong apparent changes in target movement.
  • Apparent size depends on assumed distance.
  • Loss of visual contact can be perceived as rapid departure.

Weaknesses

  • Multiple trained aircrew reported a structured object in daylight.
  • Dietrich's second-aircraft view reduces reliance on a single perspective.
  • The account included a specific object and water disturbance rather than only a point of light.

Balloon, target or test article

Strengths

  • A small wingless object can appear oblong.
  • The encounter occurred in a military training environment.
  • Classified or unfamiliar targets may not be recognised by fleet aircrew.
  • A passive object can appear highly mobile when viewed from manoeuvring aircraft.

Weaknesses

  • No identified programme or target has been matched to the event.
  • Fravor and Dietrich described behaviour they did not regard as passive drift.
  • Deliberately placing an undisclosed article in an active training area would create safety and command issues.

Conventional aircraft or atmospheric effect

Strengths

  • Unknown distance permits some ordinary objects to appear unconventional.
  • Glare and viewing geometry can hide wings, tail or propulsion details.
  • Sea-surface contrast can complicate depth and scale judgement.

Weaknesses

  • Four aircrew reportedly observed the event.
  • The white oblong appearance was described in daylight.
  • No conventional aircraft was identified through the operational response.

A genuinely unresolved physical object

We assess Dietrich as a high-value primary witness to the core visual encounter. Her account materially supports the conclusion that multiple naval aircrew observed a real and unusual target during an operational intercept.

Her testimony is strong for the occurrence and broad apparent character of the event. It is substantially weaker for precise dimensions, speed, acceleration, mechanism and origin. The most defensible conclusion is an unresolved multi-aircraft visual observation, not independently measured proof of extraordinary performance.
