Dr. Tim Brigham | Psyched about UFOs

Psyched about UFOs! LIVE Friday 9.11.26

Tim Brigham and the panel examine how UFO testimony changes when a witness encounters another person’s account before giving a full statement. Their discussion of Mario Woods and Michael Johnson’s reported Ellsworth experience concentrates on source exposure, editing and hypnosis. Canadian veteran Rocky Swanson then recounts his contacts with Luis Elizondo and explains why he withdrew from a proposed media role. His concerns centre on the documents he was asked to discuss and claims made about security clearances.

Key themes

How a later account is assembled

The opening discussion focuses on the presentation of Mario Woods and Michael Johnson’s reported Ellsworth experience. Panel members contrast what they describe as Johnson’s uncertain response during an initial telephone call with the detailed account he later gave after meeting Woods and hearing elements of the story before hypnosis. The published film does not show the complete chronology; original contact records, an account taken before source exposure and the unedited recordings would allow that development to be assessed.

Swanson’s account of a proposed role

Swanson says that contact following a 2021 interview with Luis Elizondo developed into discussions about released Canadian documents, an on-camera role and possible programme involvement. He reports checking parts of the proposal with contacts at North American Aerospace Defense Command and Canadian defence institutions before withdrawing. No messages, contact records or response from Elizondo are included, so Swanson’s testimony identifies both a consequential allegation and the records needed to test it.

Experience is not unlimited expertise

Swanson describes extensive practical use of forward-looking infrared equipment and experience teaching soldiers, firefighters and pilots to interpret its imagery. He nevertheless rejects an expert designation because he does not understand the systems as an engineer would. The distinction matters throughout the panel: a military role may establish relevant experience, but the value of a conclusion still depends on the person’s specific competence and the data available.

Belief revision under uncertainty

The panel treats ambiguous observations, cultural narratives, community ties and authoritative speakers as influences on how UFO claims acquire meaning. Swanson describes taking several years to dismantle beliefs he had once held, while Long argues that changing a public position should carry less stigma. This psychosocial account can explain how interpretations develop without determining the original stimulus in any particular sighting or establishing that a named participant acted deliberately.

Assessment

A source-critical discussion with an incomplete record

The panel raises concrete questions about chronology, source exposure, hypnosis and the use of credentials in UFO media. Its most consequential material is Swanson’s account of his exchanges with Elizondo, which currently rests on Swanson’s recollection and his report of checks made with unnamed contacts. The underlying messages, released Canadian documents, dated records of those checks, responses from the people named and the unedited chronology of the Woods–Johnson production would permit a fuller assessment. At present, the speakers explain how they revised their views and why they distrust the claims’ presentation; deliberate manipulation and the nature of the reported Ellsworth experience are not established.
