Regional wave

Formation-flying identification

Police and investigators traced multiple formations to Stormville pilots. Tight arrangements, coloured external lights and dark undersides created a single-object illusion. Pilots acknowledged the activity and some continued demonstration flights after public identification.

Residual reports

Some accounts describe close solid structure, long hover or conditions less easily matched to aircraft formations. They are fewer and less consistently documented than the mid-distance light reports.

Within the public record of the Hudson Valley sightings of approximately 1982–1986 there are few elements more central, yet more carefully bounded, than the recognition that the wave is best understood as a long-running regional phenomenon composed of many discrete events. The documented Stormville formation-flying activity provides a strong, partially confirmed conventional explanation for a large fraction of the mid-distance light-formation reports that dominate the public record. The single-object illusion produced by tight night formations with coloured lights is well understood and was demonstrated. Residual reports that describe solid structure at close range, prolonged hover under conditions inconsistent with light aircraft, or other anomalous behaviour cannot be automatically folded into the same explanation without individual scrutiny; at the same time, they do not by themselves establish a non-human craft.
